Smooth Again: How To Deal With Dry Hair

Whether it’s from the freezing weather, the regular use of styling tools or neglecting your hair from its pamper time, we are here to help with your dry hair. Our list of tips will allow you to say goodbye to dehydration and a big hello to smooth and silky hair. 👋

Washing, Drying & Styling- Try to avoid over washing your hair. Shampoo is great for cleaning the scalp and removing excess oil but if you are overusing it, it can strip the important oils the scalp produces and result in the scalp and the hair becoming too dry. Most expert advice states that you should be washing your hair every 2 to 3 days, but this really does vary depending on your hair type.

For drying, where possible, let your hair air dry naturally rather than relying on blow drying it every time. As opposed to heat styling, air drying can help your hair retain moisture better whereas you lose more moisture with a blow-dry.

If you use hair styling tools such as straighteners and tongs regularly try to reduce your usage as much as possible as the heat can seriously lead to coarse and dry locks. A great solution for this is to go heat free… so why not try the a Heatless Hair Curler for a heatless way to get great waves? The curler keeps the hair soft and silky as well as snag and frizz-free. Or there is the Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer that volumises hair without damage or dehydration. It can hold a style with texture, body and voluminous results for days so put down the styling tools, it's time to try heat-free alternatives.

If the heat option is a must, always remember to apply a heat defence product before use, such as the Remi Cachet Miracle Mist to protect your hair from damage.

Leave-In Conditioner - After you have showered, treat your hair to a leave-in conditioner occasionally such as the Moroccanoil All In One Leave In Conditioner to hydrate the hair as well as detangle and protect it. With a nourishing superfood blend and naturally derived sugars, these act as an anti-dehydration shield, perfect to give a boost of hydration to your dry hair.

Also, why not try the Remi Cachet Miracle Mist? This is a gorgeous signature formula that enhances the hair's natural beauty, leaving it noticeably radiant aswell as feeling silky soft and revitalised.

Go Sulphate Free - Products that contain sulphate such as shampoo can strip your hair of the natural oil, causing it to dry out in the long run.

Argan Oil - One of the most loved hair oils on the market, the Moroccanoil Treatment is 100% natural and loved especially by those with dry hair. Use this when your hair is in need of a deep condition to give it a boost of life. Or you can even just use it as a styling oil to perfect your look.

Hair Masks - Hair masks can really give your hair that extra TLC. At Additional Lengths, we have a collection of hair masks for all your needs, including something to combat your dry hair. The Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, is the perfect pamper night addition as a five minute hair revival treatment. It is infused with antioxidant-rich argan oil and nourishing ingredients to hydrate and condition whilst dramatically improving your hair’s texture, elasticity, shine and manageability.

Velcro roller FAQs

  • Do Velcro rollers need heat to work?

Velcro hair rollers can be used to achieve stunning results with or without heat. Using your hair dryer to apply heat speeds up the setting process, delivering bouncy curls in minutes.

However, Velcro hair rollers can be worn to bed, where their clip-free design means they shouldn’t disturb your beauty sleep. Simply apply to dry hair as part of your bedtime routine, and wake up in 6–8 hours to effortless bounce.

Both heated and heat-free Velcro roller methods deliver impressive volume and hold.

  • Can I use Velcro rollers on hair extensions?

Velcro rollers can be used on human hair extensions just the same as your own hair. Follow all the instructions and advice in this guide to get the best results from Velcro-rolling your hair extensions, and take extra care to avoid tangling, especially close to the bonds.

  • What size of Velcro rollers should I use?

The best size of Velcro hair rollers depends on your desired look:

    • Jumbo (2+ inches): Best for root lift and smoothing.
    • Large (1.5–2 inches): Loose waves and mega volume.
    • Medium (1–1.5 inches): Balanced volume with more definition.
    • Small (0.5–1 inch): Tighter curls and bounce.

  • Why do my rollers keep slipping out?

If your rollers keep slipping out, try working in smaller sections, add a spritz of texture spray, and secure withcurlerclipsfor extra hold.

  • Why do my curls look uneven?

Uneven results usually mean uneven rolling technique. To remedy this, keep your sections consistent, apply heat and cooling time evenly, and check your roller placement from root to tip.

  • Can I combine Velcro rollers with other hair styling tools?

Velcro rollers play well with other hair styling tools. Use them after curling irons to lock curls in shape, or roll sections post-straightening for extra volume and smoothness. They’re also perfect for adding hidden lift to half-up styles or popping in after a blow-dry for a polished finish.

  • Should you put Velcro rollers in wet hair?

You should not apply rollers to wet hair. Instead, apply to almost dry or completely dry hair for best results.

  • How long should you leave your hair in Velcro rollers?

If opting for a heat-free rolling technique, leave your hair in rollers for 6–8 hours for best results. Some people choose to do this overnight.
