How To Get Hair Extension Curls To Stay

“How do I make hair extension curls stay?” is a question we often get asked at Additional Lengths. So if you’re finding yourself asking this question, we’re here to help you...

Why Are My Hair Extensions Not Holding A Curl

Firstly, let's start with why your hair extensions may not be holding a curl as much as you would like. At Additional Lengths, across brands, the hair extensions that are available to you are 100% human hair, which is smooth and straight. So we’re here to help when it comes to curling it.

You may be in a situation where you are finding that someone else you know has the same hair extension type from the same range but their curls last longer than yours. This is where it is important to note that due to the different hair donors, no two sets of extensions will be the exact same.

How Do I Get My Hair Extensions to Stay?

We have five tips for you with some recommended products that can help when thinking about how to get curls to stay.

1. It All Starts With Damp Hair…

When your hair is damp, prior to blow drying and styling with heated tools, apply styling products. This will make it coarser and the hot tools you use to style will set better.

As always, when it comes to styling with heat, we recommend using a heat protectant such as the Remi Cachet Miracle Mist. Then, follow with the Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream to add some definition to your hair whilst leaving it conditioned with a brilliant shine. The oil will give a soft to medium hold.

2. Apply A Thickening Spray…

It's always best to curl your hair the day after washing, and make sure your hair is bone dry as any moisture left can burn your hair when styling.

Applying a thickening spray will give your hair more volume and tackle the problem of how to get curls to stay. The Color Wow Xtra Large Bombshell Volumizer gives hard-to-style hair a texture that can hold body and volume for days.

3. Pick The Right Tools, Your Curls Will Thank You…

To create the ultimate curls to give you “mane” character energy, your answer is Qute. The Qute Curling Tongs are here to take your curls to the next level! With two barrel sizes to choose from, 25mm or 32mm picking the right one is key to how your curls will look and last all day (or night).

For long-lasting, super-defined curls, go for the smaller 25mm barrel. It’ll give you tighter, more polished curls that stay put longer.

Top Tip: When you're curling your hair, try not to curl from the bottom to the top. If you do, the curls end up tighter at the bottom, which adds extra weight. This can weigh down the hair near your scalp, causing the curls to fall out faster.

4. Section Your Hair…

For a thorough curly look, make sure you section your hair. Then, once the curl is created, pin the curl up using Remi Cachet Sectioning Clips. Remember that curls form when the hair is warm and hold when it's cold, so pinning your curls up to cool will help them hold better.

5. Hairspray Is Your Hero

Before and after curling your hair, you want to apply hairspray to the section of the hair to ensure maximum hold. We love the Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Strong Hold that offers a long-lasting hold without stickiness or build-up.

Top Tip: Whatever you do, don’t brush through your curls after styling. Put that Remi Cachet Paddle Brush down and grab your Qute Wide Tooth Comb instead. It’ll help gently pull your curls apart without dragging them out like a brush would. The result? Curls that last!

Velcro roller FAQs

  • Do Velcro rollers need heat to work?

Velcro hair rollers can be used to achieve stunning results with or without heat. Using your hair dryer to apply heat speeds up the setting process, delivering bouncy curls in minutes.

However, Velcro hair rollers can be worn to bed, where their clip-free design means they shouldn’t disturb your beauty sleep. Simply apply to dry hair as part of your bedtime routine, and wake up in 6–8 hours to effortless bounce.

Both heated and heat-free Velcro roller methods deliver impressive volume and hold.

  • Can I use Velcro rollers on hair extensions?

Velcro rollers can be used on human hair extensions just the same as your own hair. Follow all the instructions and advice in this guide to get the best results from Velcro-rolling your hair extensions, and take extra care to avoid tangling, especially close to the bonds.

  • What size of Velcro rollers should I use?

The best size of Velcro hair rollers depends on your desired look:

    • Jumbo (2+ inches): Best for root lift and smoothing.
    • Large (1.5–2 inches): Loose waves and mega volume.
    • Medium (1–1.5 inches): Balanced volume with more definition.
    • Small (0.5–1 inch): Tighter curls and bounce.

  • Why do my rollers keep slipping out?

If your rollers keep slipping out, try working in smaller sections, add a spritz of texture spray, and secure withcurlerclipsfor extra hold.

  • Why do my curls look uneven?

Uneven results usually mean uneven rolling technique. To remedy this, keep your sections consistent, apply heat and cooling time evenly, and check your roller placement from root to tip.

  • Can I combine Velcro rollers with other hair styling tools?

Velcro rollers play well with other hair styling tools. Use them after curling irons to lock curls in shape, or roll sections post-straightening for extra volume and smoothness. They’re also perfect for adding hidden lift to half-up styles or popping in after a blow-dry for a polished finish.

  • Should you put Velcro rollers in wet hair?

You should not apply rollers to wet hair. Instead, apply to almost dry or completely dry hair for best results.

  • How long should you leave your hair in Velcro rollers?

If opting for a heat-free rolling technique, leave your hair in rollers for 6–8 hours for best results. Some people choose to do this overnight.

If setting your Velcro hair rollers with heat, they’ll be ready to remove in minutes.
