Changing Your Look With Hair Extensions

For those considering investing in pre bonded hair extensions or a set of clip in hair extensions, take a look at the ways that you can change your look with extensions to really transform your hair. Whether you’re a hair extensions fan already or someone who is curious to see what they can do for your hair, at Additional Lengths we have some fabulous products which will make your decision easy!

From short to long

Depending on the length of your natural hair, you can begin a rather extreme transformation by having hair extensions installed into short haircuts for beautiful long locks. The Remi Cachet hair extensions are perfect for getting those luxurious waves or silky straight tresses you might long for if you’ve had a shorter haircut for a while. There’s no need to wait for your hair to grow out to enjoy longer hair! Our range of Remi Cachet human hair extensions are gorgeous, with so many natural shades to choose from and colour match with. Ladies with short hair can have pre bonded extensions attached (there should be a minimum length of a few inches to allow the bonds to have a secure hold on the hair) as a way to grow out their cropped hairstyle.

For something that requires a little less commitment, clip in hair extensions can be a short haired girl’s best friend when it comes to changing up hairstyles for a special occasion.

Experiment with ombré or root stretch

Sometimes we spot a particular celebrity hairstyle in a magazine or on Instagram and wonder if we’d be able to rock the same look, before ending the daydream and moving on. But the beauty of hair extensions, and in particular clip in hair extensions, you’re free to embrace brand new looks. The popular ombré hair dye look, or root stretch, takes the hair from a darker shade into a gradual lighter shade toward the mid-lengths and ends. If you’ve been considering making the move with lightening the ends of your hair, then experimenting with clip in human hair extensions that already have that style dyed may be perfect for you!

Opt for special ombré hair extensions from the ombre, dip dye and root stretch collection from Remi Cachet that have a root colour in the same shade as your own colour for a more natural appearance before blending the hair together. From dark ash brown blending into natural ash blonde to a subtle change with darkest brown to medium chestnut brown, there’s a stunning blend of hair shades on offer available in the ombre hair look.

Boost the volume

Take inspiration from celebrities on the red carpet by utilising hair extensions for their volume boost. Those with thinning or natural thin hair can enjoy an injection of thickness and volume in their tresses by selecting high quality, clip-in human hair extensions which can be styled with heated hair tools to get luxuriously long waves.

To get the desired volume, we would recommend opting for clip in hair extensions with multiple pieces so that volume can be directed exactly where you needed. Secure your human hair extensions around the crown for a subtle lift at the roots and use a curling wand to create bouncy waves, blending the hair together as you go. You can even use clip in hair extensions to create a retro beehive look!

Trial a fringe

A great way to change your look with hair extensions is to test out a fringe. If you’re in two minds whether to go for the chop and get some bangs, then special clip in fringes can give you a preview of what type of fringe to go for. Select a clip in fringe in your hair colour and attach securely, before sweeping to the side for a sleek side fringe or styling it as a blunt fringe. Zero commitment and you don’t have to wait months for the hair to grow out – a clip in fringe can also be cut by a stylist to have it tweaked to suit your face shape.

If you’re venturing into the world of hair extensions, you’ll need some quality aftercare products to help keep them looking fabulous. The range of hair extensions aftercare products at Additional Lengths provides everything you need to keep extensions fresh and in good condition.

How To Buy The Right Hair Extensions For You Online

If you’ve always dreamt of having luxuriously long hair, or would like to thicken up your fine locks, then hair extensions may be the right solution for your needs! There are so many benefits to discover when opting for hair extensions, from a transformation in physical appearance to an infinite confidence boost, making it a special investment should you choose to go ahead. At Additional Lengths we stock a fabulous range of hair extensions and we’re on hand with this guide on how to buy the right hair extensions for you online to make sure you’re getting the best product for you.

Which hair extensions should I buy?

If you’re a beginner in the world of hair extensions, we understand that it can be overwhelming learning about the various types of hair extensions available, and knowing which to buy. Before committing to buying your hair extensions, you should be asking yourself some key questions about what you’d like them to do for you. Would you like them to be a temporary look, or a more permanent addition to your hair? Having an idea of what you’d like to get out of your new hair extensions, as well as having a budget in mind, will certainly guide you to making the right choice when it comes to buying hair extensions online.

Temporary hair extensions

If you’d like an instant length and volume boost for a special occasion, but don’t want the commitment of sewn in or bonded hair pieces, then clip in hair extensions can be a great option. Easy to secure and remove yourself, clip in hair extensions can work well for ladies wanting a quick hair transformation for one night only! Our range of clip in hair extensions features so many different styles for you to choose from, including the Remi Cachet Clip In Deluxe set of 100% high quality human hair in three pieces which can be attached to the hair with no damage. Designed to give you instantaneous results, you can get thick and luxurious hair in minutes!

Longer lasting, more permanent hair extensions

Those who are dedicated to the longer hair life and would like a more permanent hair look, then pre bonded or weft hair extensions may be for you. Applied close to the root using hot or cold fusion techniques; or micro rings or silicone locks, or sewn in if using weft extensions; this type of hair extensions requires a lot more commitment than clip ins. If purchasing your pre bonded hair extensions online, you can select your hair colour and application type before taking them to a stylist to install for you.

Considering the cost

Hair extensions can be an expensive investment, but one that is worthwhile to get the best quality hair. Weft hair extensions and pre bonded hair extensions have a higher cost than the clip in hair extensions, the reasons being include the amount of time it takes for a stylist to install the hair plus the quality. Don’t forget to invest in the correct aftercare products to keep your hair regime pristine.

Time for maintenance appointments

It goes without saying that you want your hair to remain looking its best! With pre bonded hair extensions, the extensions will need to be refitted at least every 3 months by a professional stylist to keep up with the hair regrowth, so take this into consideration if you’re thinking of going for this type of hair extensions.

What are the best hair extensions?

The best hair extensions for you will all depend on your hair type and what you’re wanting from your new extensions. There may be instances where a certain hair extension product may not be best with your natural hair type and scalp condition, which may prevent you from opting for pre bonded hair extensions. Opt for a consultation with a professional extensionist to go through your options.

The difference between remi hair and synthetic extensions

When looking to buy hair extensions online, you may see remi hair and synthetic hair options, but what is the difference between the two hair types? Remi hair is human hair which has come from ethical sources and provides the natural looking movement and shine of natural hair. The processing technique that happens to get the hair looking beautiful is also related to the end result of the high quality and strength of the hair. Nowadays, synthetic hair can look incredibly natural and takes little effort to style as synthetic hair extensions often come pre-styled in a wave, curl or a straight style. Only special heat-friendly types of synthetic extensions can be styled with heated hair tools, whereas straighteners and curling wands can be used whenever you like on remi hair!

How do I colour match my hair extensions?

When buying hair extensions online, you will need to colour match by referring to a colour chart which is a dedicated page with images of the hair shades available for each hair extension product. With Additional Lengths, you’re able to narrow down the hair colours by base and mixed colours, plus blends such as ombre, dip dye and root stretch colours. If you’re considering having pre bonded hair extensions fitted, a stylist will conduct an informal consultation with you prior to your appointment where they will assess your current hair and ensure a good colour match. This is an important step to get wonderful, natural looking hair extensions that is well blended with your own hair for a beautiful finish!

At Additional Lengths we understand that buying hair extensions, especially pre bonded hair extensions which is a long lasting option, can be a major investment and that you’re bound to have plenty of questions. If you’re still unsure about choosing the right hair extensions for you, take our fun interactive quiz to get an idea of which hair extension method may be right for you and your current hair!

Hair Extensions FAQ

Getting hair extensions can be a big investment and commitment, and here at Additional Lengths we understand that there will be many questions you’d like answering before you consider taking the plunge. We’ve taken some of the most asked questions and answered them all in one place, starting from the basics and going through to hair extensions aftercare.

If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch to speak to a member of the Additional Lengths team!

Q: What are the benefits of hair extensions?

Hair extensions are a great way to experiment with your look! For those with thin hair, extensions can be used to add that much desired thickness, similarly with flat and limp hair where hair extensions can provide a boost in volume. If you are after colour without the commitment, you can use extensions to add highlights or even something a little more daring!  Hair extensions also give fantastic length and can be blended really well with your own hair for a flawless look, whether it’s for a special occasion with clip in hair extensions, or something more permanent that requires more commitment.

Q: Can anyone have hair extensions applied?

Unfortunately there will be certain situations where we would not advise going ahead with having hair extensions fitted. This could be a scalp conditions such as eczema and psoriasis or maybe something in your lifestyle which would mean that extensions may not be suitable or that the extension needs to take other factors into consideration for the application and aftercare advice. A thorough consultation will go through this with you to ensure that hair extensions are right for you.

Q: What is Remi hair?

Remi (or remy) hair is 100% human hair and is one of the most popular human hair extension types on the market. With the Remi hair extensions from Remi Cachet and other brands, the cuticles are intact and flow in the same direction from root to tip, meaning the hair is smoother and less prone to tangling.

Q: What are the different types of hair extensions available?

You may be surprised to learn that there are many different types of hair extensions available! Finding the right extension type for you can involve considering the cost, style, application and longevity you wish to get from them.

  • Clipin hair extensions: This is a great temporary hair extension option for those seeking a quick boost injection or a look transformation for a short time (think parties, bridal hair and special occasions). There’s zero commitment to clip-in extensions and can be an inexpensive introduction to the world of hair extensions!
  • Tape hair extensions: With these extensions the hair is adhered to a tape which is then attached on either side of your own hair near to the root. Perfect for those with fine hair and those who want to try more permanent extensions.
  • Weft: A long section of hair is sewn together in a lace weft strip which can be then attached to your hair by a stylist using either a sewing, plaiting or gluing technique. The wefts can be cut to length to add several strips to create the finished look.
  • Pre-bonded: The popular pre-bonded hair extensions are ideal for those looking for a long term product to invest in that can provide length and volume for up to one year with regular maintenance. Pre-bonded hair extensions can be applied to your hair in several different ways, including hot or cold fusion and micro ring method. At Additional Lengths we stock Flat Tips, Stick Tips, Nail Tips and micro ring hair extensions, like Remi Cachet Ultra Tips® and Mini Tips® hair extensions.

Q: Can I dye my hair extensions?

Yes, you can dye your human hair extensions but it’s important to avoid applying the hair dye directly onto the bonds of your extensions. We would recommend getting this professionally coloured with your stylist. It’s a good idea to dye your hair your desired colour before getting your hair colour matched with your new hair extensions by a stylist.

Q: How will I know which type of hair extensions are right for me?

It’s a good idea to do a bit of research into the different types of hair extensions available to find the right kind for you and your lifestyle. Perhaps a temporary boost in volume and length is your goal, so clip-in hair extensions would be suitable. If you’d like more permanent hair extensions that may require maintenance, then a pre bonded type of hair extension which adheres to the hair just below the root may be the right option. A consultation with your extensionist will be able to talk you through this.

Take our interactive quiz to get a good idea of which type of hair extensions will be right for your needs!

Q: Does my hair have to be a certain length to have hair extensions applied?

Short hair girls can still get hair extensions! Ideally we’d need to be able to work with 4-5 inches of natural hair to attach pre bonded hair extensions securely. In fact, hair extensions are a great way to help you through that awkward growing-out stage!

Q: What can I expect at a consultation with a hairstylist?

A consultation between customer and stylist should always happen prior to applying extensions so that the customer is aware of the realistic outcomes, and the stylist knows what the customer would like. A stylist will take a look at the current condition of your hair, acknowledging whether it has been dyed or chemically treated, before recommending the best product and colour matching. The extensionist will also talk you through the aftercare regime so that you understand the additional care and commitment required.

Q: How long will it take to have extensions applied?

This will entirely depend on the method of application and how many you need. Once we know your specifications of what you’d like from hair extensions, including length, volume and type of hair extensions, we can give you an estimated length of time it may take to have hair extensions applied. It will be completed in one salon visit though!

Q: What kind of aftercare is needed?

Remember, with synthetic hair extensions it is not possible to use heated hair styling tools such as straighteners or curling wands as it may damage the hair, but with human hair, you’re free to use those styling tools – just avoid getting them too close to the bonds.  Always use a gentle brush to avoid pulling on the roots.

We provide our clients with an aftercare leaflet which contains important information on how to look after your new hair extensions. See the Remi Cachet aftercare guidelines for further info.

Q: Do I need to use a special type of shampoo and conditioner?

We recommend using specific hair extension products as they have been tested on the hair and bonds, to extend the life of the hair extensions. Many high-street branded products are not suitable so please check with your stylist. Just as you would with your natural hair, it’s important to use heat defence spray when using heated tools and keep all styling products away from the bonded area.

Q: Why do I need to go to maintenance appointments?

As above, being proactive with aftercare will help ensure that you get the most out of your hair extensions. Naturally over time your own hair will grow, so there will be some root growth that can be solved by keeping up with maintenance appointments with your stylist. They will remove the extensions and re-apply them further up at the roots, meaning that they will stay looking natural and healthy!

Q: How long will the extensions last?

This will vary depending on many factors including aftercare and maintenance.

Q: How are hair extensions removed?

When it comes to removal, it’s important that you have your hair extensions removed professionally to avoid causing damage your hair. Tape hair and pre-bonded hair applied with heat or cold fusion will also need a specific removal product to release the bonds. The removal process, depending on application, can take up to 2 hours.

Hair Tips

How Do I Colour Match My Hair Extensions?

The key to having fabulous looking hair with hair extensions is to properly match the colours between your own hair and the extensions, so that the finish is seamless and natural looking. So how do we colour match hair extensions? And how do you blend extensions with your own hair? When considering investing in pre bonded hair extensions, it can be question that many ladies ask their stylist as you don’t want the extension joins or colour difference to be obvious.

We’ve put together a helpful guide to outline the process of how our Remi Cachet and Additional Lengths hair stylists would colour match hair extensions, how they achieve the perfect colour blend to suit your hair and the best way to blend hair extensions.

How do stylists colour match hair extensions?

Firstly, going to have hair extensions put in professionally is a great way to ensure of a good colour match as hair stylists have a clear view of your hair from all angles. For example, it’s quite common for the root colour to be a different shade from the ends, especially if you’ve gone for a balayage look.

Colour rings are used to help match up hair shades as they allow us to compare shades easily with sample sizes of the hair extension. For the hair colours we match to the mid lengths and ends of the hair. With colour rings, stylists always match to the root colour and not the hair colour as this could stand out more visibly if a lighter ring was used. If the hair has a number of tones and shades then we can select a range of colours and mix them together to create a new colour blend other than what we already sell in our range of Remi Cachet hair extensions.

Most popular mixed colour tones are already made up and sold by us but in cases where three or four colours are needed, it’s great to add double tones together. This means that you’re getting a unique blend of various hair tones to perfectly match your own hair, whether it’s a natural or dyed colour. We can also create ombre and balayage hair colours using extensions without the need to colour clients hair at all as long as we get the length and blend correct.

The application type also makes a difference when it comes to colour matching, including to what rings you select to attach the mini/ultra or stick tips hair extension type. Each stylist will offer a fully customised hair extension application to ensure the best results for your new hair. So a customer with thin hair often has a lighter hair colour than what we would advise when it comes to colour matching, but this is normally just the front sections which are naturally lighter than the back, (which they don’t see). A professional would customise this to accommodate any differentiation that occurs with the colour of the hair or to apply the colour that replicates the overall shade, more than just the front.

How to blend hair with hair extensions

It goes without saying that the best way to blend your natural hair with hair extensions is to be properly colour matched to get the shades right. But if you’ve bought clip in hair extensions online for example, you’ll be required to seek out the perfect match on your own using a colour chart on a screen, which may prove difficult!

Avoid the tell-tale colour difference by considering the tones in your natural hair; are they cool or warm toned, and do you have multiple shades such as highlights running through the hair? The way your current hair is will affect the colour hair extensions you should go for. For example, if you’re an ash toned blonde, it makes sense to stick to those shades over a warm toned champagne blonde. For those who have dyed hair, a great way to get hair extensions to match perfectly is to purchase real human hair clip in extensions which can be dyed the exact same shade at home.

Ensure that your extensions are styled the same way as your natural hair in order for the two types of hair to blend together perfectly. Once attached, style the hair and extensions together, whether that’s using a curling wand to create luxurious waves or straightening the lengths for a sleek look. Also, whether going for pre bonded hair extensions or clip in, using the same or similar length hair with layers can be a good way to achieve a natural finish. For shorter hair though, it’s possible to go for blending weft extensions that can be attached to create layers so the difference in lengths is less obvious.

Colour matching at Additional Lengths

Hair Tips Remi Cachet

How To Grow Out Your Current Hair Colour

Here at Additional Lengths we understand that a colour you loved a year ago may not be what you’re feeling right now, and with that admission comes the dreaded roots and the long wait for the previous colour to grow out of the hair. Sometimes it’s as easy as picking a new colour or matching a dye to your roots and colouring over the old shade. Other times it can be a waiting game and using other techniques to hide or embrace the natural roots coming through.

However, growing out your roots needn’t be a chore!

We’ve put together some hints and tips, along with product recommendations from our Remi Cachet brand, on how to grow out your current hair colour and love your look at the same time. If you’re reluctant to put another dye on your hair then read on for some simple tips and tricks to go with the flow of your root growth.

Opt for ombre effect hair extensions

If you’re considering hair extensions because you’re after the luxurious length and volume that they can provide, but you don’t want to commit to one base colour, or want your natural hair colour to blend seamlessly with a grown out colour, then we suggest opting for root stretch, dip dye or ombre hair extensions. The subtle blend of colours will work in harmony with your hair, avoiding that harsh line between shades for a softer finish.

The pre-bonded hair extensions which feature the ombre and dip dye style are the Remi Cachet Elegance Flat Tips extensions. There’s a beautiful mix of colours that range from more obvious dip dye colourways with dark ash brown with natural ash blonde, which is perfect if you’re hoping to eventually grow out a lighter shade, or more subtle ombre shades such as medium golden blonde with platinum blonde.

Darkest Brown/Medium Chestnut Brown – Dark Ash Brown/Natural Ash Blonde – Dark Ash Brown/Light Ash Blonde

You can also work with your professional stylist to get the right blend of hair shades for subtle low-light or high-light effect. We love the Remi Cachet Elegance Ultra Tips® from the pre-bonded hair extensions range which lie completely flat with the natural flow of the hair and is fitted in place using the Remi Cachet Ultra Locks® system which is produced purposely for this extension type. The perfect combination of hair colours range from dark chestnut brown and dark ash blonde, to light golden brown with darkest brown. If you’re growing out a blonde dye on naturally brown hair, then opting for custom hair extensions with a mix of shades can help to blend the colour perfectly!

Hairstyles

There’s many ways you can successfully rock the re-growth period using different hairstyles. Whether you’re looking for an everyday hairstyle or something to transform your usual look for a special occasion, we’ve got 3 hairstyles to hide roots that we think you’ll love.

The simple bun

A style suitable for all hair types, the bun can work wonders in downplaying the amount of root growth you have, and can also help work it in your favour for a sassy hairstyle. There’s the polished chignon that is perfect for work, or the top knot for a lazy yet well put together look that can be dressed up or down to reflect your mood. With the ends tucked away, you’re left with a less obvious division between hair colours that can look like a well intended ombre.

A mermaid inspired braid

Long roots can actually look pretty wonderful when put into a hairstyle such as a braid. The various tones and shades in the hair can add an appealing dimension when pulled together into a fishtail braid or a French braid. You could combine two hairstyles in one with the milk-maid style braided headband which will draw attention away from the roots whilst looking adorable at the same time!

Waves & curls

The ultimate way to deflecting attention from your roots? Texture – and plenty of it. Beautiful ringlets, curls and waves all texture and offers multiple surfaces for light to shine from. To get the perfect luxurious wave whilst growing out your hair colour, we suggest the fantastic GHD Classic Wave Wand which creates stunning long-lasting curls and waves easily. Add even more texture by using hair products specifically designed to improve or boost the hair’s natural texture and lift hair at the root; sea salt sprays, texturising powder, or volumising mousse. Voluminous hair will enhance highlighted areas – so put down the straighteners!

Other simple tips on how to work with root-regrowth:

  1. Change up your part from the middle to the side
  2. Buy a root concealing hair product in the form of a coloured powder or spray
  3. Apply dry shampoo to the roots
  4. Get some volume into the hair which will add dimension
  5. Use hair accessories such as a hairband or hair scarf

So whether you’re keen to work with your roots or want to embrace your hair growth, there’s plenty you can do to keep your hair looking fabulous. From ombre hair extensions that work with the hair for a stretched root look, to playing with different hairstyles and changing up your parting to try to disguise the look of roots, you’re bound to find the right thing for you.

Hair Tips

Help! My Hair Is Thinning

We understand that thinning hair can cause distress, whether it’s happening due to stressful situations you’re experiencing, through illness or hereditary predisposition. Whether you’re experiencing thinning hair without hair extensions, or you’ve removed your extensions and found the hair to be thin and lifeless, take a look at our guide on how to deal with thin hair.

Add some oomph to your haircare

Hair care products are fighting in your corner; they are designed with what you want to get of your hair in mind. Using the right hair products for your thin hair type ensures hair is supported by thickening hair ingredients. Here at Additional Lengths, we stock an excellent range of volumising hair products from Sexy Hair. Treat thin hair to the Big Volume shampoo and conditioner which will create a good base of moisturised and revitalised hair to work with, then use their Big Root Pump Volume Mousse at the roots and a thickening spray. The Sexy Hair range of thickening and volumising products will work wonders on flat, thin hair.

Avoid: leave-in conditioners and firm hold hairsprays which will weigh down and flatten thin hair.

Take a look at your diet

Did you know that what you eat can affect the condition of your hair? It’s true! A lack of minerals and vitamins can cause hair loss and dryness, so focus on adding plenty of iron-rich food such as green veg and soya products to your diet. Foods that contain zinc are also great for giving hair a boost from the inside, so add pumpkin seeds, eggs and shellfish to your shopping basket to up your intake. Alternatively, look into supplementing your diet with vitamin supplements – sea kelp has been known to improve the condition and thickness of hair!

There may be an underlying cause to sudden hair loss or thinning, so check with your GP to investigate further.

Avoid: eating too much salty, over-processed junk food, so get more veg on your plate and improve your nutrition.

Discover hair extensions!

We may be biased when we say this but, hair extensions can make a world of difference to the look and feel of your hair. A full head of high quality human hair extensions can be attached to your own hair through a fine mesh or with Remi Cachet Ultra Tips. Hair extensions can offer a much needed confidence boost to those suffering with thin hair.

Avoid: long length hair extensions which could weigh down the hair follicles over time. Opt for a mid-length look to be kinder to your scalp.

However, it might be time to embrace shorter hair…

…if only for a little while. If you’re dedicated to your favourite human hair extensions and love the length they provide, but it’s beginning to take it’s toll on your natural hair, it might be time to embrace the shorter look. Long hair extensions can weigh down the hair follicles, causing problems for the natural hair. Having a break in between having hair extensions fitted gives your natural hair a chance to regain its strength. Chop away wispy, thin hairs and add layers into your natural hair to give a sense of volume, and try some waves to give the appearance of thickness.

We hope that you’ve found our advice on how to deal with thinning hair helpful, and encourage you to take a look through our hair care products and hair extensions here at Additional Lengths. Trends

A Brief History Of Hair Extensions

Here at Additional Lengths, we’re interested in all things hair. From what our favourite celebrity is doing with their tresses this week, to the latest social media craze (unicorn hair, anyone?), we love being in the know. If, like us, you’re curious about the story behind hair extensions, then take a look at our brief history of hair extensions to learn more about the origins of our favourite beauty accessory. You may be surprised by the longevity of this popular hair trend!

Style like an Egyptian

Surprisingly, the first documented origin of hair weaves can be dated back to Ancient Egypt. Appearance was very important during this time period and the process of beautification was highly thought of, with a lot of time and money spent on creating the perfect look. Ancient Egyptians observed a hierarchy of status through their appearance, with hair weaves and wigs often being worn by those higher up in society, for example, by Pharaohs, political figures and wealthy families. Not only were wigs worn by women, but also by men and children! Hair pieces at this stage in history were created using human hair and dyed sheep’s wool, and were often attached by sewing into knots of the person’s real hair.

The infamous ruler of Ancient Egypt, the alluring Cleopatra was also a fan of utilising hair braids and wigs to add to her undeniable beauty. She favoured the conventional black dyed hair extensions, preferring a fringe and tightly curled mid-lengths, and would add decadent gold beads to the ends for a touch of glamour. Egyptian wigs were the height of fashion back in B.C times.

Big wig of the century

French King Louis XIV was quite the trend-setter during his reign in the 18th century. When the king became rather thin on top, his tireless team of servants hired a staggering amount of wig-makers to save his majestic appearance by creating a series of large and lengthy wigs. Often seen in royal paintings, men wore big wigs to undoubtedly hide the balding and greying that comes with age, in an attempt to keep their youth. The wig pieces that men wore also acted as a status enhancement. Ever heard of the phrase ‘big wig’? There you go!

Character of King Louis XIV in BBC’s ‘Versailles’ displaying a luxurious wig

Hair during the 18th and 19th centuries were often collected from the poor, with women from the working classes growing their hair in order to sell it. Real hair wigs fetched a huge amount in those times – up to a weeks wages!

A symbol synonymous with 60’s style is the beehive, which was achieved with fake hair often attached to a hair band. At this time, long hair extensions were not too commonly used as they were deemed rather expensive. Girl bands such as The Ronettes rocked the beehive look perfectly, with soft bangs and high hair teamed with shift dresses becoming their signature look. At Additional Lengths we stock a range of instant beehive hair pieces that can be worn to achieve this same 60’s inspired look!

It was during the 1980’s that hair weaves were favoured by women with Afro textured hair, opting for a hair weave over potentially damaging chemical relaxers, which offered them a new straighter hair finish.

Girl power of the 1990’s

Hair extensions rose in popularity and became used by the masses during the decade of the 1990’s. New and less expensive techniques were developed ensuring widespread popularity, with the clip-in hair extensions becoming commonly used due to their cost and availability. It was also around this time that coloured hair pieces were popular, with pastel blue and baby pink streaks featuring in many young girl’s hair dreams.

Again, during this time celebrities were influencing our hairstyles. Supermodels such as Tyra Banks were seen wearing hair extensions on the international fashion catwalks during the 1990’s, and in early 2000 legendary singer Britney Spears sported some impressive extensions for her ‘Oops!… I Did It Again’ music video.

Noughties to now

With celebs such as the Kardashian sisters rocking different hair looks at every event, we as the general public are also using hair extensions to change up our style. Plus, the development of the quality of hair extensions, including the creation of beautiful Remy hair extensions, means that we’re able to use extensions not only for length, but for volume and to add subtle tones of colour.

It’s interesting to see how the creation of hair extensions has revolutionised the possibilities in hairstyling, and the rich history of hair extensions just proves how long lasting and much loved the process of adding length and volume to natural hair has been over the years. We don’t think that the obsession with hair extensions will slow down anytime soon! Five Reasons To Wear Hair Extensions

shutterstock_350965784

At Additional Lengths, we may be slightly biased but we believe that there are some excellent reasons why you should explore the world of quality hair extensions with us. We work closely with one of the UK’s leading hair extensions brand, Remi Cachet, to provide our customers with excellent human hair extensions. So, why wear them?

1. Texture

Firstly, extensions allow you to play around with different hair textures. If you have naturally straight hair which won’t hold a curl or wave, then you have the option to invest in a quality hairpiece or hair extensions which provide immediate luxurious waves. Curly haired ladies can experiment with poker straight tresses for a completely fresh look, avoiding any damage caused by chemically treating the hair in order to straighten. Plus, with the high quality human hair used to create some extensions, you’re free to use heated stylers to fashion your own texture.

2. Thicken up thin locks

We all know that simply having some extra hair can really make a difference to the overall feel and look of your hairstyle. Thin hair often struggles to hold a style or volume, and goes through a regular damaging process of backcombing and heat in an attempt to achieve the desired thicker finish. Whether you’d love a more permanent thickness, or want to give your hair a boost for a special occasion, there are hair thickening solutions available here at Additional Lengths.

3. Volume

The benefit of extra volume definitely ties in with the hair thickening point mentioned above. The placement of clip-in extensions can affect the appearance of volume to your hair. Careful placement around the crown area and blended in with the natural hair can really lift the hair and give it an extra dimension. High ponytails are very much in vogue this year, so why not add some extensions to add some extra oomph to the ponytail? We love the instant results you can achieve with our Remi Cachet 100% human hair extensions.

4. Length

Perhaps you’ve discovered that short hair just isn’t for you, or you have a hard time growing your hair to a length you’d be more happy with. This is wear the instant results of hair extensions come in to solve your hair woes. 5. Temporarily transforms your look

If you’re looking to make a big change to impress at an upcoming event or party but don’t want to commit to a specific hair colour or cut, then clip-in human hair extensions are definitely for you. They are so easy to apply to your natural hair and simple to remove, with minimal stress or damage to your hair or scalp.

Sometimes we just want to experiment with a new look by injecting some colour into our hair – without the commitment of permanent hair dye. Coloured hair extensions can provide an opportunity to inject a little colour without the permanency or waiting for the colour to grow out. A vibrant shade of red or subtle tones of pink clip-ins would look great peeking through waves. For blondes, perhaps you’d like to try out some lowlights, and for brunettes the option of highlights would take your look to a different dimension. Clip-in hair extensions cause zero damage to the hair, and can be applied and removed with minimum fuss.

How To: Use hair-friendly hair bands and grips to avoid snags and damage to the hair. Hide the hair band by wrapping a small piece of hair around it and securing. Smooth down any frizz with a light hair serum which will also provide a touch of shine. For nights out, add some texture with a salt spray or lightly backcomb the hair for an elevated, fashionable finish.

Rainbow hair

Last year we saw lots of beautiful pastel shades and silver hair trends on the street from girls who like to experiment with unusual hair colours. For 2017, pops of vibrant colours or a rainbow mix of hair shades will take centre stage. Primary colours placed side by side with pastels make a statement, whilst ‘streaks’ of blue or red visible through braids is bang on-trend.

Get cute by using hair accessories or hair clips to keep hair parted, or simply tuck behind your ear. Extreme side partings look great with sleek straight hair which emanates shine with every turn.

How To: Take a comb to gently part the hair either just off centre, or more towards your ear depending on how much you wish to mix up your look. Keep flyaways in check with a touch of product around the parting smoothed towards the mid-lengths.

Go for the Lob

The ‘lob’, or long bob, is a modern take on the classic bob hair cut. Conveniently, if you’re already growing out a bob and your hair is in that in-between stage, you’re already halfway there! Pros: you’re still able to tie your hair up, ombre can still work well at this length and it’s achingly on-trend with celebs such as Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne displaying the perfect long bob. This cut is also a great option for keeping some length whilst getting rid of any damage caused by over styling issues or dryness from bleach.

Beautiful blond woman with style hairstyle

How To: Ask your hairstylist for a long bob that ends just above the collar bones. This is an easy to style haircut so it’s perfect for those girls who like a low maintenance cut. Create gentle waves with a heated curling wand or straighteners from GHD and use a flexible hold hairspray to set the look.

Pump up the volume

It’s the bigger the better when it comes to hair trends this year, and a more wearable version of this mantra is voluminous Hollywood waves.
