Your Selfcare Guide to Healthy Hair

The Autumnal weather is here and whilst we’ve been waiting all year for a Pumpkin Spice Latte, the change of season (and the on-going pandemic situation) can leave us feeling a little low. Like never before, selfcare has become our saviour and we definitely have more time on our hands right now. So, no more excuses, we’ve got our top tips for some self-care to really benefit your tresses and we all know good hair – makes us feel good!

First up you may like to try something specifically designed to clean your scalp removing product build-up and soothe any areas dry areas. Malibu C’s Scalp Therapy, as the name suggests, will clean and nourish the scalp too. Your scalp is literally the root of healthy hair so well worth adding this to your homecare routine every week.

Malibu C Scalp Therapy for that tingly clean feeling

Whilst washing your hair, try a little extra scalp massage. Keep it gentle, especially if you have your extensions in, and concentrate on stimulating your scalp to ease those stresses away and boost the blood’s circulation to your hair follicles, encouraging hair growth.

Post bath time, then wrap you your tresses in a hair towel to help absorb the excess water and keep your head warm whilst you grab your loungewear and a cheeky hot chocolate. Well, the calcium from the milk helps feed your hair with plenty of protein, and Cocoa is packed with vitamins and nutrients for healthy hair. Like you needed that excuse to enjoy a cup of steaming hot chocolate!

Before settling in front of Netflix, comb your tresses through to remove any knots and indulge in some extra TLC. Have the sharp cold winds dried out your locks? Maybe the central heating has brought out the frizz? That leave-in treatment is your next step to rescue your hair and create healthy, shiny locks by morning. We love Moroccan Oil’s Masks and Oils for this.

Remember to avoid your extension bond areas with any product and for those of you with bonds or micro rings, it’s always wise to put your hair dryer on a low heat setting and gently dry the bonds to stop water ingress from breaking them down.

GHD’s Helios Hair Dryer

Don’t you feel better already? “I’m washing my hair tonight” has real benefits for your overall wellbeing, taking time out to nourish yourself as well as your hair. Making this a part of your life each week will give you the beautiful healthy hair you crave.

Choosing The Right Eyelashes for you

False lashes can provide you with longer, fuller and more dynamic eyelashes,  enabling you to create the look you’ve always dreamed of in an instant. While we all have our favourite styles, have you ever thought why? Just like choosing a hairstyle to suit your face shape, certain eyelash styles will look better on you than others. The right false eyelash can enhance your natural eyes, while the wrong eyelash can change the shape of your eyes completely.  Whether you’re every day or occasion eyelash wearer, here at Additional Lengths, we are on hand to guide you through the best styles for you, while providing expert advice on how to remove eyelash glue without damaging your natural lashes.

First things first, you’re going to need to know what eye shape you have. The best way you can do this is by observing the shape and profile of your eyes using a hand-held mirror. This way you can get a close-up observation. Here is what you should look out for:

  1. Look at your iris (the coloured section around the pupil), can you see the whole shape or is partially covered by your eyelid?
  2. Look at your eye shape,  do your eyes angle up or down at the sides?
  3. How much space is there between the top lid and under-eye?
  4. Is the crease of your eyelid visible with the eyelids open?

Once you are familiar with your eye shape,  you will need to know which false eyelashes to choose. Finding the right eyelashes can be tricky; with so many to choose from,  it’s easy to become overwhelmed. Do I choose volume over length? How do I make my false eyelashes look natural? How do I create a daytime look?  These are all questions you may be asking when it comes to choosing your false eyelashes.

False eyelashes for almond eyes

Almond eyes are slightly pointed at the ends and have a wider centre. If you have almond eyes you’ll find that your iris is slightly covered by the upper and lower lid.  The eye equivalent of an oval face shape, most lash styles suit almond eyes as strip lashes are often designed to follow the natural contour of the upper almond lid.

If you want to show off and highlight the shape of your eye, volumising full lashes that are evenly distributed are your best choice. Our Remi Cachet 3D effect silk lashes (S3) are created from layered synthetic silk; they instantly uplift and volumise your lashes giving you a dramatic yet elegant look.

False eyelashes for round eyes

If you have round eyes then you can see most, if not all,  of your iris and the overall shape of your eyes will replicate circular shapes.

This shape eye suits curly lashes that really enhance and lift the shape of your curved top lid. Lashes such as our Remi Cachet mink lashes M4, are lightweight and full of curved texture so they sit perfectly on round eye shapes. Round eyes should avoid heavy, voluminous lashes as they can weigh your eyes down and make your beautiful wide eyes look smaller and flatter.  You should aim to keep the lower lash line subtle, too much mascara on the bottom lid can unbalance the look.

False eyelashes for hooded eyes

Hooded eyes have a crease with a prominent brow bone. If you have hooded eyes you’ll find that your eyelid is not visible when the eye is open. This means choosing false eyelashes requires a little more thought,  the wrong lashes can pull hooded eyes down and give the illusion they are smaller than they actually are.

The trick with hooded eyes is to experiment with a fluttery extension; choosing a lightweight lash, such as our Remi Cachet strip mink lashes (M1),  will eliminate the danger of the pulled down look. Choosing a false lash with long lashes directly above the pupil, not just the side, will really open the eye at the centre, where it is most needed.

False eyelashes for mono-lidded eyes

Mono-lidded eyes,  or epicanthic folds, are most common among Asian people. This is the term used when the skin covers the upper eyelid and no eyelid crease is visible.

Mono-lids can really pull off top heavy styles and can be really creative with their look. Fluttery, multi-layered strip lashes, such as our Remi Cachet 3D effect silk lashes (S2) are the best choice for this eye shape as they open up the eye.  The intercrossed sections of these eyelashes create a textured look that can be styled with both day and night time looks.

False eyelashes for close-set eyes

If you have close-set eyes then the distance between your eyes is small. The best way to test this is to check if the distance between your eyes is shorter than the width of one of your eyes.

When choosing the right eyelashes for close-set eyes you need to take the focus away from the inner corners and highlight the eyes outer corners. Choosing strip lashes that lift and lengthen on the outer corners, such as our Remi Cachet natural silk lashes (S8) can balance out your eye shape and provide you with a look that you can transition for a number of occasions. If you’re applying eyeliner on close-set eyes, lining the inner half of your eyes can make your eyes appear smaller, instead focus the eyeliner on the outer half of your eyes.

False eyelashes for upturned eyes

If the corners of your eyes point higher than the inner corners then you have upturned eyes.

Upturned eyes are the perfect canvas for creating sleek eyeliner looks. The queen of the cat eye, this eye shape suits eyelash styles that are longer on the outer corners than they are on the inner. Our Remi Cachet silk lashes (S7) provide that sultry feminine look that complements this look. If you have upturned eyes, you don’t want your eyes to look smaller so be careful when applying eyeliner, a thin line works much better than a thick one, as it still makes your eyelashes look full without shrinking your eye size.

How to put on false eyelashes

Now you know which eyelashes suit your eye shape, it’s time to apply them.

We would recommend a coating of mascara before application as this will help bond the lashes.

  1. Remove the lashes from the box

When removing your eyelashes from the packet or box you need to peel them, very carefully, from the outer edge, never from the inner corner. If you break or bend the lash from the inner corner then it is likely to not fit your eye properly and will have the tendency to bounce off your lash line. Use tweezers or your fingers to gently tease out the lashes, after this, rest the lashes back in the box to keep them clean.

  1. Measure up your lashes

Rest the strip lash along your lash line (without any adhesive) , this will help you gauge whether you need to trim it to size. The strip should start where your natural eyelashes begin, if you start too close to the inner corner this will irritate your eyes and is likely to not stick as well. Gently lay out the lash along your top lash line to the outer corner. If the eyelash is hanging over your natural eye, it can pull your eyes down.

  1. Trim the lashes to size

If you do need to trim the lash to avoid over hanging, ensure that you cut from the outside edge and don’t cut through the lashes. Cutting the lash at the vein will prevent chopping excess lashes you wanted to keep.

  1. Curve the lashes into shape

When lashes are in the box they can sometimes flatten. To retrieve their natural shape you can use a make-up brush or your fingers to  gently brush the lashes up, so they can bounce back to their original shape.

  1. Apply the glue correctly

Dot a thin layer of glue straight from the adhesive applicator right along the vein of the lash. Leave the lash for a few seconds so the glue goes tacky before application. If you’re wanting your lashes to last a long time, from day to night for example, you can apply a small amount of glue along your lash line too.

  1. Placing the lashes

Place the inner corner of the lash where the natural lash begins, look down and press the strip lash against your lash line,  finishing at the outer edge.

  1. Bonding the lashes

Using tweezers or your fingers, push your false lashes as far down to the natural lash line as much as possible, you don’t want to see a strip of skin between. As we said, a coating of mascara lets you pinch and bond your lashes together easily. You can even add another coating of mascara over the top to completely bond the two together.

  1. Create uplift

Finally, if you want to uplift your lashes push your finger against the underneath of the lashes to create a pushed up and curved effect.

How to remove false eyelashes

When you come in from a night out, sometimes the last thing we want to think about is removing our eyelashes properly. Nevertheless, removing your eyelashes the right way will not only nourish and protect your natural lashes, it will also keep your false eyelashes in a good condition, ready for use again. Follow our simple and easy guide so you know exactly how you should be doing this.

  1. Soak a cotton bud and run it along the upper lash line

Soak a cotton bud in an oil-based eye makeup remover. After closing your eye,  gently rub against your lash line to loosen the eyelash glue.

  1. Peel away the eyelashes

Starting from the outer corners of the eye gently lift the lashes away.

  1. Remove excess glue and make-up

Once you have removed your eyelashes, soak a cotton pad in eye makeup remover and wipe over your eyes to remove any make-up and glue residue.

How to remove false eyelash glue off false lashes

Now you’ve removed your eye make-up, it’s time to remove the eyelash glue from your false lashes. If you’re careful during this removal process you will be able to get another use out of them.

  1. Peel off excess glue

The glue left on your lashes should be tacky enough to gently peel away.

  1. Remove excess mascara

If you’ve got residue of mascara left on your eyelashes, saturate two cotton pads with eye-make up remover and place your lashes between the two pads.  Leave for 5 minutes and then gently wipe clean.

  1. Place your clean lashes back in the original box or somewhere they will remain flat.

3 Spooky Halloween Hair & Make Up Ideas

That spooky time of year is slowly crawling toward us again so it’s time to start thinking about how to make a statement this Halloween with your hair and makeup. Whether you want to go all out with special effects gore and guts, or if you prefer a scary but cute vibe, there are so many hair and makeup products on the market to help you achieve the perfect Halloween costume. At Additional Lengths we’re gearing up for Halloween by revisiting old classic costumes and considering ways to bring them up to date. Read ahead for our top three Halloween hair and makeup ideas to get your creative mind ticking!

Skeleton Girl

An oldie-but-goodie has to be the traditional Skeleton Halloween costume. We all have one, so that’s a great start! The art of creating skeleton makeup is to see it as face painting; using existing outlines and contours of the face to create black shadows and a white skull shape. It’s all in the detail, so spend time focusing on the mouth area where you’ll see the bare teeth, which will have real creepy impact!

For the most detailed skeleton makeup tutorial we’ve seen, check out the video below from makeup artist Giulianna Maria.

When it comes to styling your Halloween hair, take spooky skeletal inspiration from Lady Gaga by opting for a really high ponytail with long luscious lengths. A clip in ponytail will add instant length to your hair, building the look even further. The clip in ponytail is easy to attach to the hair and comfortable to wear for a Halloween party! Opt for the same or similar shade to your own hair colour, or alternatively, select a contrasting colour to add to your crazy skeleton look. Dress in a black trouser suit with a white shirt and a bow tie to completely imitate the ‘Born This Way’ video image, or find a skeleton-style onesie from a costume shop to suit your preferences.

Vampire Goddess

For horror with a touch of glam this Halloween, a vampire goddess is the perfect character to play dress up with. The Halloween makeup for a vampire sticks to the general rule of pale skin, dark eyes and even darker lips. Extra points for the addition of pointed fangs and fake blood dripping from the side of your mouth! Get a truly undead look by also adding contact lenses and the appearance of faint veins on the face around the eyes. Swap black lipstick for a plum-coloured matte liquid lipstick and add fake eyelashes to enhance your vampire eyes.

Follow a vampire makeup tutorial from Leyla to get a Halloween makeup look you can take from house party to the dancefloor.

As the vampire goddess character suggests, everything about this look is ultra feminine and sultry; how else are you supposed to attract your food? When dressing as a vampire for Halloween, think Morticia Addams. Clothing should encompass lace or sheer fabric in dark red or black for that sensual gothic attire; a dress with long bell sleeves with a plunging neckline is a great silhouette here. To create beautiful vampiress hair, why not opt for Remi Cachet clip in hair extensions? With the stunning clip in human hair extensions you can get excellent length and luxurious hair by backcombing your hair at the crown and simply clipping in the separate wefts before blending with your own hair. Style the Remi Cachet Deluxe clip in extensions into a centre parting and use straighteners to get those smooth Morticia Addams-style locks. Dark haired ladies can add to the vampire Halloween hair look by creating a widows peak using a black or brown eyeliner.

Mystic Fortune Teller

Our final Halloween look is the mystic fortune teller which has become a popular choice in recent years. This isn’t necessarily a scary character to portray, but it’s a curious one all the same that fits in with the theme of the unusual and the eccentric! With this Halloween makeup look, play with metallic eyeshadow, dark toned ombre-style lipstick and plenty of shimmery highlighter for an ‘out of this world’ look.

Check out how Taylor Bee creates her own take on the fabulous fortune teller Halloween makeup.

Once you’ve got the hypnotic eye makeup and shimmer looking perfect for your fortune teller Halloween makeup look, dress up appropriately with a long skirt and a bardot top. Plenty of accessories is where this costume will really come alive; think lots of gold bangles, layered necklaces and hoop earrings. Coin hair accessories, such as a chain positioned across the forehead, is the perfect finishing touch. This is another Halloween hair look that requires volume for a bigger impact, so consider the reliable tape hair extensions from Remi Cachet to deliver a semi permanent hair enhancing solution. Incorporate mini braids into the hair for a bohemian hairstyle suited to any good spooky fortune teller.

No matter what looks you intend to serve up for Halloween 2018, we hope that our Halloween hair and makeup ideas have inspired you and shown how we can help with your quest for the best costume. Essential Hair & Beauty Travel Items

If you’ve yet to go on your summer holiday or you’re planning on jetting off again before the summer season ends, we’ve put together an essential list of hair and beauty travel items that are absolute must-haves when enjoying a tropical holiday.

Beach beauty

It goes without saying that the number one product that should be on the top of your holiday packing list is a good SPF sunscreen. Preventative measures are better than dealing with the sun damage, sore burnt skin and peeling that comes with sunburn! There’s so many different types of sun protecting products on the market available in various forms, such as lotions, sprays and oils. You can even get a scalp protecting products with SPF in to keep your delicate scalp from burning during a day in the sun (or you can invest in a stylish hat!).

To be sure to purchase the SPF factor suitable for your skin type it’s worth considering the sun’s effect on your skin, so take note of the following points:

  • Fair skin that burns easily will need the highest SPF available – factor 50.
  • Medium skin complexions that burn minimally and tans well should go for factor 15-30.
  • Darker skin which never burns and tans readily can consider factor 2-10.

Another item worth having in your beach bag is a lip balm with SPF in. Not only will it keep your lips nourished, it will offer than extra bit of protection in the sun on a place often missed when applying sunscreen to the face. Every little helps.

Summer makeup tips

We all know how difficult it can be to keep a full face of makeup on during the heat; slipping and sliding, our favourite foundation can quickly become the enemy! If you’re not feeling the makeup free look but just want some light coverage, then why not opt for a BB cream? Enjoy the lightweight formula that will smooth over the complexion perfectly, giving your skin the freedom to breathe in the sunshine.

The impact of a bright lip cannot be underestimated, and a holiday is the perfect time to experiment with different summer lipstick shades. We love a classic red or playful pink for an evening of mojitos, and a tropical coral toned lipstick to brighten up the face during the day.

Again, sometimes the heat means skipping steps in your usual makeup routine. Another summer makeup tip is to skip the eyeshadow (which, let’s face it, in the heat could turn into a creasey mess!) and aim straight for a good few coats of mascara. Always opt for a waterproof mascara for holidays due to the sweat and water exposure. On an evening, elevate the mascara look with a flick of waterproof eyeliner to bring the look together. A simple makeup look for a holiday that is quick and easy – meaning more time to spend at the poolside bar.

Hot hair

Whether it’s for natural hair or your human hair extensions, a gentle brush should definitely be on your packing list. This is why we love the infamous Tangle Teezer which will ‘tease’ out any tangles acquired during a day at the beach and smooth down the hair after a dip in the pool. Tangle Teezers are compact enough to slip into a beach bag for taming hair on the go, and it’s the ideal brush choice for human hair extensions because they’re so gentle and won’t pull on the joins.

Hair treatments on-the-go

Looking after your hair whilst on holiday needn’t mean adding lots of extra products to your suitcase, taking up precious baggage allowance! When it comes to replenishing and nourishing the hair after a day of sun exposure and sea salt, at Additional Lengths we highly recommend the range of hair treatments by Malibu C. Conveniently packaged in 12ml sachets that are perfect for travel, these hair treatments are packed with goodness that includes gluten-free plant proteins and vitamins. Pop on the Malibu C Miracle Repair deep conditioning hair treatment for it’s mega moisturising power – just what your dried out hair will need on holiday.

Blondes can rejoice and face the swimming pool with vigour safe in the knowledge that any discolouration and damage can be soothed afterwards with a Malibu C Swimmers Wellness Remedy hair treatment. This must-have treatment will kick crunchy, lifeless swimming pool affected hair into shape to reveal it’s usual softness and shine. Pack a few of these Malibu C hair treatments and apply regularly over the course of your trip for beautiful hair. When you’re home, your scalp may feel drier than usual due to the sun exposure, so turn to the Malibu C Scalp Therapy treatment to relieve any dryness or itching with it’s soothing botanicals and essential oils infused ingredients.

Another brand we can’t get enough of come summertime is Moroccan Oil and their fabulous range of hydrating, restoring and moisturising hair products that are suitable for use on hair extensions. Here at Additional Lengths we stock a great collection of the Moroccan Oil sets and kits which include travel sized products – ideal for your summer holiday!

Holiday hair care tips for hair extensions

A summer getaway may be a time to relax but it doesn’t necessarily give you time off from keeping your hair extensions looking their best. We’ve got some simple tips to help care for your hair extensions whilst on holiday:

  • Avoid overexposure to chlorine and seawater by fixing your hair into a topknot or plait – The chemicals and metals in seawater can affect the colour and texture of extensions, as well as create tangles. Look for anti-tension hair ties that won’t damage the hair.
  • Regularly brush the hair – Use a Tangle Teezer or a brush with flexible bristles and regularly brush your hair extensions throughout the day for manageable hair.
  • Take your hair extension aftercare products with you – If you forget your hair extension friendly shampoo and conditioner, you may have to rely on hotel products which won’t be as suitable.

Take a look at our special guide on pool safety for your hair for more tips on how to enjoy your holiday with fabulous looking hair extensions that will look their best the entire length of your trip!

Valentine’s Day Pamper & Prep

Pretty lady

Whether you’re getting yourself date ready or preparing for a night out with the girls, Additional Lengths have a useful pamper guide to get your started.

The day before

The evening before the big day is the prime time to do any beauty housekeeping which will give yourself more time the following day. It also helps create the perfect base look to build upon with hair and make up in the hours leading up to your Valentine’s plans.

Fresh nails

Get your claws ready for some love by visiting your favourite salon to get a fresh set of acrylics or gels done. Book your manicure appointment in advance to avoid disappointment! Stick to the romantic theme by requesting pale pink or purple shades, or go for the vampy look with merlot red with a high shine. For ladies who prefer natural nails, give them a quick file and a dash of classic red nail varnish to get yourself in the Valentine’s mood. Pamper yourself with a pedicure in a matching shade.

Get that bronzed look

Prep your body for self tan by jumping in the shower for some exfoliation; use exfoliating gloves and a body scrub for optimum results. Dead skin cells removed, you’ll be left with clean, smooth skin – the ideal base for your fake tan product. With no rough, dry skin, the product should apply evenly with no stubborn patches! At Additional Lengths, we love the Lauren’s Way self tanning products. Choose your preference of a mousse or lotion. The Lauren’s Way Self Tanning Mousse Kit includes everything you need to achieve that desired glow; body polish, tan enhancing moisturiser and self tanning medium bronzing mousse. As all pro tanners know, applying with a mitt gives a flawless finish with no streaks in sight.

Any mistakes can be rectified with a morning shower and more exfoliation.

Valentine’s Day

Depending on how long your beauty routine takes, we have some tricks up our sleeve to help you get the most out of your hair and make up rituals.

Make Up

If ever there was an event which called for a beautiful smokey eye, it is a Valentine’s date. A hot make up trend for this year is the bronze and orange eyeshadow look which is a contemporary take on the traditional brown shades we usually see for a sultry smokey eye.

Follow these steps:

  • Take a light orange over the lid, blending into the socket
  • Create some dimension with a brown eyeshadow on the outer edges of the eye
  • Gently pack a metallic bronze onto the centre of the lid
  • Dab a champagne colour shadow on the inner corners of the eye to brighten
  • Blend, blend, blend!
  • Curl lashes with eyelash curler & apply two coats of your favourite black mascara

As the beauty industry denotes – an eye is not complete without a cat eye flick of eyeliner. This simple trick outlines the eye and brings the whole look together. Fill in your brows and slick on a nude lipstick as a final touch.
