We understand that you’ll want to get the most out of your clip-in hair extensions, and doing so requires a little care and attention to keep them looking in top condition. Washing the hair gets rid of any products you’ve applied, any smells from smoky environments, and also revives the look of the extensions. At Additional Lengths, we place a high importance on hair care and the care of all hair extensions. We want you to enjoying wearing the extensions, and feel good doing so!
Follow our step by step guide on how to wash human hair clip-in extensions and get them looking their best and feeling fresh.
Step 1: Prepare the hair for washing
As with your natural hair, it’s important to brush or comb the hair before washing to smooth out any tangles or knots so it’s easier to wash. For ease, lay the hair pieces together on a flat surface to do this.
Step 2: Fill sink or bath with lukewarm water
Lay the human hair extensions in a sink or bath of lukewarm water, avoiding getting the clip in sections wet so you can hold them comfortably. It’s easier to wash all of the hair pieces together, rather than individually.
Step 3: Use normal shampoo and conditioner
Mix some shampoo in with the lukewarm water to create a soapy ‘bath’ for the hair and pop the clip-ins in, ensuring that they are thoroughly immersed in the shampoo water.
We have some Additional Lengths hair extension hair care products available on site, including a shampoo and conditioner which have been formulated to cleanse and improve the texture of your hair. For the Remi Cachet hair extensions, there are also some specialised products available that are suitable for use with the human hair extensions. The Remi Cachet Hair Extension Conditioner includes penetrating oils to help nourish the hair and leave it silky soft.
Lift the hair pieces from the sink and drain the water, leaving the wet clip-ins ready for shampoo and conditioner. Rub the product gently into the mid-lengths and ends to cleanse them effectively.
Tip: If your blonde clip-ins are getting brassy, use a purple toned shampoo to cool it down!
Step 4: Rinse
After shampooing and conditioning the hair, rinse thoroughly under a running tap of lukewarm water. Any remaining shampoo or conditioner can leave the hair looking greasy and lank, so make sure you’re rinsing well, until the water runs clear with no bubbles.
Step 5: Squeeze hair to get rid of excess water and brush out tangles
Just as you would with your own natural hair, gently squeeze the water out from top to bottom using a towel to remove most of the moisture. Use a brush or comb to smooth down the hair and ensure there are no tangles.
Tip: You can use a nourishing leave-in conditioner but apply sparingly to avoid a greasy finish.
Step 6: Leave to dry naturally
Set the damp extensions on a flat surface or hang them up to dry naturally. Try to avoid using a hairdryer on your clip-ins because you might damage them, especially if they are synthetic!
Tip: We would recommend that if you wear your clip-in extensions on a daily basis, give them a wash once a week.
