How To Wash Clip-In Hair Extensions

We understand that you’ll want to get the most out of your clip-in hair extensions, and doing so requires a little care and attention to keep them looking in top condition. Washing the hair gets rid of any products you’ve applied, any smells from smoky environments, and also revives the look of the extensions. At Additional Lengths, we place a high importance on hair care and the care of all hair extensions. We want you to enjoying wearing the extensions, and feel good doing so!

Follow our step by step guide on how to wash human hair clip-in extensions and get them looking their best and feeling fresh.

Step 1: Prepare the hair for washing

As with your natural hair, it’s important to brush or comb the hair before washing to smooth out any tangles or knots so it’s easier to wash. For ease, lay the hair pieces together on a flat surface to do this.

Step 2: Fill sink or bath with lukewarm water

Lay the human hair extensions in a sink or bath of lukewarm water, avoiding getting the clip in sections wet so you can hold them comfortably. It’s easier to wash all of the hair pieces together, rather than individually.

Step 3: Use normal shampoo and conditioner

Mix some shampoo in with the lukewarm water to create a soapy ‘bath’ for the hair and pop the clip-ins in, ensuring that they are thoroughly immersed in the shampoo water.

We have some Additional Lengths hair extension hair care products available on site, including a shampoo and conditioner which have been formulated to cleanse and improve the texture of your hair. For the Remi Cachet hair extensions, there are also some specialised products available that are suitable for use with the human hair extensions. The Remi Cachet Hair Extension Conditioner includes penetrating oils to help nourish the hair and leave it silky soft.

Lift the hair pieces from the sink and drain the water, leaving the wet clip-ins ready for shampoo and conditioner. Rub the product gently into the mid-lengths and ends to cleanse them effectively.

Tip: If your blonde clip-ins are getting brassy, use a purple toned shampoo to cool it down!

Step 4: Rinse

After shampooing and conditioning the hair, rinse thoroughly under a running tap of lukewarm water. Any remaining shampoo or conditioner can leave the hair looking greasy and lank, so make sure you’re rinsing well, until the water runs clear with no bubbles.

Step 5: Squeeze hair to get rid of excess water and brush out tangles

Just as you would with your own natural hair, gently squeeze the water out from top to bottom using a towel to remove most of the moisture. Use a brush or comb to smooth down the hair and ensure there are no tangles.

Tip: You can use a nourishing leave-in conditioner but apply sparingly to avoid a greasy finish.

Step 6: Leave to dry naturally

Set the damp extensions on a flat surface or hang them up to dry naturally. Try to avoid using a hairdryer on your clip-ins because you might damage them, especially if they are synthetic!

Tip: We would recommend that if you wear your clip-in extensions on a daily basis, give them a wash once a week.

Hair Tips

Four Ways To Style Your Hair Extensions

You’ve got your hair extensions for length, volume or both, but now what? Hair extensions needn’t just hang there lifeless, there’s plenty of styles to be experimented with! Here at Additional Lengths, we love seeing different hairstyles created with hair extensions.

The positive of having human hair extensions, like the luxurious ranges from the brand Remi Cachet, is that you’re free to use heated stylers on the hair to create different looks. The looks, such as waves or curls, can then be washed out and you can start again with a new look! You’re also able to use an array of hair products as you don’t have to worry about them damaging the synthetic materials of non-human hair extensions. From texturising spray to shine serum, hair products can really add to the finished style.

Half up, half down

This is such a popular hairstyle because it allows you to have the full length of the underneath hair, whilst keeping the top layer up and off the face. It’s a great look for hair extensions, but be warned that it may show the application joins depending on whether you have clip-in extensions or not. The top part can be tied into a topknot, or left as a partial pony tail.

Luxurious waves

Make like the Kardashian clan and embrace the luxurious long waves trend. Prep the hair with a heat protectant and use a curling wand on small sections of the hair to create loose waves from the mid-lengths of the hair with extra shine. This is a great way to get more volume and texture into your hair extensions.

Pretty plaits

Plaits are totally having a moment in the hair world lately but they don’t have to give a school girl vibe. Divide the hair into two sections and start your plait high up on the scalp of French braids, or complete two plaits and wrap around the front of the head for a pretty crown style.

Ponytail extensions

We all know the struggle of growing out hair, waiting for it to reach a length that we’re happy with. Or maybe you’ve grown tired of your bob cut and long for lengthier locks. Perhaps for a special occasion you want to completely transform your look. For this, we recommend the ponytail extension. Every girl should have a ready-made high quality ponytail extension ready to attach to your own hair at a minutes notice for an effortlessly sleek look.
Simply use some shine spray or serum to smooth down any flyaways from the crown and sides of the head and attach the hair piece to your own ponytail, while blending with the natural hair. Take a piece of the hair and wrap it around the base to conceal any clips, and secure in place with a hair grip. Just make sure you get the perfect colour match or it won’t look natural!

A pop of colour

Why not mix things up with your hair and experiment with a new colour? Maybe not an entirely new colour, but hints of it throughout the hair. This may be an acquired taste but injecting a pop of colour to your hair using the Additional Lengths clip-in instant colour streaks can be a fabulous way to jazz up a hair style. Opt for contrasting colours, such as turquoise or blue for dark hair, and pink for lighter hair. You could leave the hair down for the most colour, or tie it up or braid the hair so only small sections of colour will be visible.

Valentine’s Day Pamper & Prep

Pretty lady

Whether you’re getting yourself date ready or preparing for a night out with the girls, Additional Lengths have a useful pamper guide to get your started.

The day before

The evening before the big day is the prime time to do any beauty housekeeping which will give yourself more time the following day. It also helps create the perfect base look to build upon with hair and make up in the hours leading up to your Valentine’s plans.

Fresh nails

Get your claws ready for some love by visiting your favourite salon to get a fresh set of acrylics or gels done. Book your manicure appointment in advance to avoid disappointment! Stick to the romantic theme by requesting pale pink or purple shades, or go for the vampy look with merlot red with a high shine. For ladies who prefer natural nails, give them a quick file and a dash of classic red nail varnish to get yourself in the Valentine’s mood. Pamper yourself with a pedicure in a matching shade.

Get that bronzed look

Prep your body for self tan by jumping in the shower for some exfoliation; use exfoliating gloves and a body scrub for optimum results. Dead skin cells removed, you’ll be left with clean, smooth skin – the ideal base for your fake tan product. With no rough, dry skin, the product should apply evenly with no stubborn patches! At Additional Lengths, we love the Lauren’s Way self tanning products. Choose your preference of a mousse or lotion. The Lauren’s Way Self Tanning Mousse Kit includes everything you need to achieve that desired glow; body polish, tan enhancing moisturiser and self tanning medium bronzing mousse. As all pro tanners know, applying with a mitt gives a flawless finish with no streaks in sight.

Any mistakes can be rectified with a morning shower and more exfoliation.

Valentine’s Day

Depending on how long your beauty routine takes, we have some tricks up our sleeve to help you get the most out of your hair and make up rituals.

Make Up

If ever there was an event which called for a beautiful smokey eye, it is a Valentine’s date. A hot make up trend for this year is the bronze and orange eyeshadow look which is a contemporary take on the traditional brown shades we usually see for a sultry smokey eye.

Follow these steps:

  • Take a light orange over the lid, blending into the socket
  • Create some dimension with a brown eyeshadow on the outer edges of the eye
  • Gently pack a metallic bronze onto the centre of the lid
  • Dab a champagne colour shadow on the inner corners of the eye to brighten
  • Blend, blend, blend!
  • Curl lashes with eyelash curler & apply two coats of your favourite black mascara

As the beauty industry denotes – an eye is not complete without a cat eye flick of eyeliner. This simple trick outlines the eye and brings the whole look together. Fill in your brows and slick on a nude lipstick as a final touch.
