- Swimmers is a holiday essential and mermaids. Restoring your locks and scalp after spa, chlorine pools and sea water visits to prevent dryness, itching and “swimmers green hair” (copper buildup, which is the culprit behind green discoloration).
We have been busy this summer testing our hair to learn more about the adverse effects. Earlier this summer we wrote about the hazards of holidays on your hair and we wanted to learn more to support those of you who have suffered with discolouration or dry hair as a result of water filtration systems, swimming pools and other factors causing a reaction on your hair; you are going to love what we’ve found out.
So here’s the science:
Your hair will only change colour (green or orange) due to a chemical reaction. This chemical reaction is caused when your hair comes into contact with the minerals in water, and we don’t just mean chlorine in swimming pools or the salt from the sea. There’s the water filtration systems in hotels where you wash your hair but more disturbingly there are other chemicals your hair come in to contact with. The whole reaction process is speeded up when you’re in the sun – with the heat fuelling the reaction.
The real culprit is a chemical called Avobenzone. It’s an ingredient used in most sunscreen products for its UVA absorbtion but just like your clothes that get discoloured by the cream so too can you hair when it comes in to contact with the cream. It is also used in lots of products such as perfume and hair perfume so all extension lovers need to check their product ingredients carefully. Because of the nature of these products and hair coming into contact with them, wearers may only notice a patch of discolouration and naturally the issue can occur here as well as away on holiday. So time to read those product labels in more detail! There are lots of derivatives so it can also occur with other similar products.
Our MD Victoria Lynch was keen to get to the bottom of the whole issue for clients:
“Firstly, it’s really important that the hair extension wearer understands that the colour change is a chemical reaction to something that has happened to the hair. We have been testing our hair across the ranges and colours, alongside other brands with sun cream, the affects of water and sun. We were amazed at the effects and also to learn other household products that have the same chemicals in and which we bring our hair in contact with.”
Check out our snaps to see for yourself.
We are keen to share this information to teach our lovely hair extension wearers more about the products they bring their hair into contact with and understand it’s not the hair extensions themselves – but a reaction when water (with minerals) mixes with everyday chemicals we use on our bodies and hair. In forearming our customers, we can help keep our hair tresses perfect for longer.
Want to know a quick fix …it’s a miracle in a sachet Malibu C product and we tell you more in our next blog.
If you are looking for the finest quality human hair extensions, you’ve probably heard the word Remy. Remy human hair is known industry wide as the highest grade type of hair suitable for extensions that money can buy, simply because it is long-lasting and helps you achieve almost-natural looks with hairpieces and wigs, unlike synthetic hair or other lower quality hair.
How is Remy hair collected?
Also known as ‘full cuticle hair’ within the industry, Remy hair has all cuticles intact and healthy. From this, they all flow in the same direction – root to tip. It’s usually collected by placing a woman’s hair in a ponytail and cutting it as is, leaving no room for hair to fall out. The process is very specific and due to the careful collection, Remy is the only type of human hair that can guarantee tangle-free hair and alignment in its most natural form. Although Remy is the best quality, this doesn’t necessarily mean that all other types aren’t worth your money. Certain types of hair are more suitable for other applications, so it’s best to do your research before committing to any purchases to make sure that it’s right for you.
Remy hair truly deserves the quality tag that it has, and as a result, they are a bit of an investment. However, with great care and maintenance – looking after them as you would your natural hair – extensions, wigs and hairpieces made from Remy can last you through many years. If you’re interested in purchasing Remy hair, explore our website further for unrivalled customer support and extremely competitive prices. We’ll be with you every step of the way to make sure that you receive the best product for your specific circumstances.
This Sunday night’s Teen Choice Awards was another glitzy affair and whilst the US teen’s voted for everything from their favourite TV show, song and even tweet – there were no awards for Best Hair. So here it is our top three as we really couldn’t pick just one winner.
Winning the TV Comedy Choice Award, Glee star Lea Michelle was radiant with her sun kissed baby lights and tousled hair. We’re betting on extensions adding to her length here and we can recommend our 20” SuperWeft here. The reason we really love her look is the simple twists at the font and pinned back to open up her face and keep the hair from her lip gloss when accepting her award. She could have gone down the plait route but choice this simpler chic twist which works for the red carpet as well as a casual day do.
Flying the flag for us Brits was favourite Cat Deeley who always looks like such a beach babe. Warm tones, this bronde is bang on trend with her root regrowth too. She pulls off effortless with soft layers and gentle natural wave. Hair Oil is a must in the humidity of LA to keep tresses moisturised and fight the dreaded frizz.
There’s been lots of attention for fellow Brit Rita Ora and her baby pink dip dye going down a storm with fans and the hair industry as a whole. You can read here how her stylist created this look but remember to always work with your professional #RCStylist to achieve a bespoke colour look like this. Check out other custom colour work with our extensions here to get some more ideas.
As it’s October Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we do love our pink so if you buy one of our fabulous Denman brushes at any time in the month we will donate £2 to Breast Cancer Care.

Auburn, red and fiery tones are a constant feature in the latest trends and they’re brilliant to add something spicy to your overall look. However, as with all hair colours, you should first consider how well-matched your desired hair colour will be with your skin tone. Using the wrong shade can make you look washed out and not provide the pop of colour you wanted. Following our helpful guide you can establish the best shade for your own tone.
Fair to Light Skin
When your skin is light and quite pale, the world is truly your oyster. Whatever shade you’re feeling, you’ll be able to pull it off. Light skin gives you a blank canvas in many ways, simply due to the fact that there are no existing strong colours. Whether you want to go for a bright orangey-red or a darker, more subtle hint of maroon you’ll suit it regardless.
Light to Medium Skin
If you have light to medium skin, you should stay clear of the lighter and brighter shades of red. Instead, opt for shades that are cool and warm, like burgundies and cherries. This will add dimension to the face and add more colour. If you aren’t sure, you can try highlights before committing to dyeing your hair, which will give you a feel for the shade.
Medium to Dark Skin
For those with darker skin, there’s some good news. Darker skin goes great with vibrant colours as there’s more contrast, meaning that if you want a bright look you can get it. Additionally, darker reds that will leave a tint of colour are great too. However, we don’t recommend medium shade reds for darker skin as it tends to wash out your face.
If you need help selecting human hair extensions for your hair shade or want to know more about the shades that will suit your skin tone the best, get in touch with us at Additional Lengths. We’re incredibly talented in the field of hair and will always go the extra mile to assist you.
