Q: What Are The Benefits Of Hair Extensions?

Hair extensions are a great way to experiment with your look! For those with thin hair, extensions can be used to add that much desired thickness, similarly with flat and limp hair where hair extensions can provide a boost in volume. If you are after colour without the commitment, you can use extensions to add highlights or even something a little more daring!  Hair extensions also give fantastic length and can be blended really well with your own hair for a flawless look, whether it’s for a special occasion with clip in hair extensions, or something more permanent that requires more commitment.

Q: Can Anyone Have Hair Extensions Applied?

Unfortunately there will be certain situations where we would not advise going ahead with having hair extensions fitted. This could be a scalp conditions such as eczema and psoriasis or maybe something in your lifestyle which would mean that extensions may not be suitable or that the extension needs to take other factors into consideration for the application and aftercare advice. A thorough consultation will go through this with you to ensure that hair extensions are right for you.

Q: What Is Remy Hair?

Remi (or remy) hair is 100% human hair and is one of the most popular human hair extension types on the market. With the Remi hair extensions from Remi Cachet and other brands, the cuticles are intact and flow in the same direction from root to tip, meaning the hair is smoother and less prone to tangling.

Q: What Are The Different Hair Extension Types Available?

You may be surprised to learn that there are many different types of hair extensions available! Finding the right extension type for you can involve considering the cost, style, application and longevity you wish to get from them.

  • Clip–in hair extensions: This is a great temporary hair extension option for those seeking a quick boost injection or a look transformation for a short time (think parties, bridal hair and special occasions). There’s zero commitment to clip-in extensions and can be an inexpensive introduction to the world of hair extensions!

  • Tape hair extensions: With these extensions the hair is adhered to a tape which is then attached on either side of your own hair near to the root. Perfect for those with fine hair and those who want to try more permanent extensions.

  • Weft: A long section of hair is sewn together in a lace weft strip which can be then attached to your hair by a stylist using either a sewing, plaiting or gluing technique. The wefts can be cut to length to add several strips to create the finished look.

  • Pre-bonded: The popular pre-bonded hair extensions are ideal for those looking for a long term product to invest in that can provide length and volume for up to one year with regular maintenance. Pre-bonded hair extensions can be applied to your hair in several different ways, including hot or cold fusion and micro ring method. At Additional Lengths we stock Flat Tips, Stick Tips, Nail Tips and micro ring hair extensions, like Remi Cachet Ultra Tips® and Mini Tips® hair extensions.

Q: Can I Dye My Hair Extensions?

We don’t recommend colouring hair extensions. It’s a good idea to dye your hair your desired colour before getting your hair colour matched with your new hair extensions by a stylist.

Q: How Will I Know Which Type Of Hair Extensions Are Right For Me?

It’s a good idea to do a bit of research into the different types of hair extensions available to find the right kind for you and your lifestyle. Perhaps a temporary boost in volume and length is your goal, so clip-in hair extensions would be suitable. If you’d like more permanent hair extensions that may require maintenance, then a pre bonded type of hair extension which adheres to the hair just below the root may be the right option. A consultation with your extensionist will be able to talk you through this.

Q: Does My Hair Have Be A Certain Length To Get Hair Extensions Applied?

Short hair girls can still get hair extensions! Ideally we’d need to be able to work with 4-5 inches of natural hair to attach pre bonded hair extensions securely. In fact, hair extensions are a great way to help you through that awkward growing-out stage!

Q: What Can I Expect From A Consultation With A Hairstylist?

A consultation between customer and stylist should always happen prior to applying extensions so that the customer is aware of the realistic outcomes, and the stylist knows what the customer would like. A stylist will take a look at the current condition of your hair, acknowledging whether it has been dyed or chemically treated, before recommending the best product and colour matching. The extensionist will also talk you through the aftercare regime so that you understand the additional care and commitment required.

Q: How Long Will It Take To Have My Hair Extensions Applied?

This will entirely depend on the method of application and how many you need. Once we know your specifications of what you’d like from hair extensions, including length, volume and type of hair extensions, we can give you an estimated length of time it may take to have hair extensions applied. It will be completed in one salon visit though!

Q: What Kind Of Aftercare Is Needed?

Remember, with synthetic hair extensions it is not possible to use heated hair styling tools such as straighteners or curling wands as it may damage the hair, but with human hair, you’re free to use those styling tools – just avoid getting them too close to the bonds.  Always use a gentle brush to avoid pulling on the roots.

We provide our clients with an aftercare leaflet which contains important information on how to look after your new hair extensions. See the Remi Cachet aftercare guidelines for further info.

Q: Do I Need To Use A Special Type Of Shampoo And Conditioner?

We recommend using specific hair extension products as they have been tested on the hair and bonds, to extend the life of the hair extensions. Many high-street branded products are not suitable so please check with your stylist. Just as you would with your natural hair, it’s important to use heat defence spray when using heated tools and keep all styling products away from the bonded area.

Q: Why Do I Need To Go To My Hair Maintenance Appointments?

As above, being proactive with aftercare will help ensure that you get the most out of your hair extensions. Naturally over time your own hair will grow, so there will be some root growth that can be solved by keeping up with maintenance appointments with your stylist. They will remove the extensions and re-apply them further up at the roots, meaning that they will stay looking natural and healthy!

Q: How Long Will The Hair Extensions Last?

This will vary depending on many factors including aftercare and maintenance.

Q: How Are Hair Extensions Removed?

When it comes to removal, it’s important that you have your hair extensions removed professionally to avoid causing damage to your hair. Tape hair and pre-bonded hair applied with heat or cold fusion will also need a specific removal product to release the bonds. The removal process, depending on application, can take up to 2 hours.
